Submitting your website to directories is a great way to build backlinks and increase search engine rankings of your website. SEO has started turning submission to directories to its advantage so it is one of the most common and widely used methods of building backlinks for most of the online marketers. It is one of the most affordable, often free, link building methods existing out there today. Directory submissions has a potential to produce the great results over most of the Search Engine Rankings. There are many benefits associated with directory submissions for which the directory submission is used by so many SEO Experts.
A web directory is a collection of web pages with similar subjects and similar content. These pages of links contain synopses of each web page submitted to them, and visitors looking for a specific kind of content can cruise the correct directory page to find the exact website that they are specifically looking for. However, submitting to directories by hand is tedious though, since there are literally thousands of general and specific niche directories out there.
Backlinks are the biggest benefit of web directory submissions so we can say that main objective of using this method is link building. If search engine bots find your link on the directory sites, they will follow those links to your site increasing the chances of your site being indexed. Search engine bots, often referred to as robots, visit all the websites over the Internet to gather the information for archiving. More backlinks a website has, more frequent those bots will visit those websites and higher those websites will rank.
It’s always been great to get the main keyword that you are targeting in the links to your website. However this isn’t always possible and unfortunately many of the best web directories won’t let you do this. Sometimes you can get rid from this problem by slipping in a keyword at the end of your company name. You can use your desired anchor text as a title which will be eventually hyperlinked to your website giving you an anchor text backlink from the web directories. Therefore directory submissions using the keyword as anchor text will increase your link popularity. Always try to get one of your keyword in and vary the anchor text as much as possible. This will appear more natural towards the Search Engines.
You can submit your website to the web directories yourself. All you have to do is to search for a list of web directories that accept free submissions. Put a directory link together with your results and just keep submitting your website over there. It is extremely time consuming and some time it become tedious but you are building some backlinks for free and very easily. If you find it headache or simply don’t have much time to do it yourself, then you can hire a link building service provider who can do the submission for you.

Well, it’s useful, but I feel that experience and mistakes and just going out and doing it yourself is the best course you can take. But the actual course isn’t useful really, you can find that information in an eBook or on sites like problogger.net and sites like that.

Directory Maximizer is my favorite directory submission service. I have used a lot of others that advertise more directories but the acceptance rates are crap. I typically see a 60 – 70 % index rate of my directory submissions.
